The Ph.D. in Theology program at the NSOT equips faculty and other leaders through the cultivation of research capacities and skills, global sensibilities, ecclesial commitments, theological discernment, personal and vocational formation, and the craft of teaching and learning.

DEGREE COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS

THE Ph.D. IS AWARDED UPON SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE FOLLOWING:

  • Research language requirements
  • Comprehensive examinations 
  • A dissertation proposal
  • A scholarly dissertation based on research in the area of the student’s major concentration

  • Doctoral Dissertation (8-12 credits 
  • This is required for Doctor of Divinity (D.Div.), Doctor of Christian Philosophy (D.C.Phil.), and Doctor of Theology (Th.D.) degrees, and optional for other doctoral degrees. Length: 100-125 pages typed and single-spaced (maximum 12-point font).

Most Doctoral degrees require the completion of 40 credits beyond the Master’s degree. $75- $95 per credit
3) a practicum or internship experience. The student is expected to work together with the Dean in designing a program that will meet his desire for growth in the area(s) in which God has placed a passion in his heart. The following degrees require 60 credits beyond the Master’s degree, including a mandatory doctoral dissertation: Doctor of Theology and Doctor of Christian Philosophy. These credits may come from a combination of 1) courses taken; 2) an original thesis or ministry project, and

  1. 1st Class Standard Dissertation – 70% or higher:
  2. A 1st Class piece will display most, if not all, of the following characteristics:
  3. special signs of excellence such as unusual clarity, excellence of presentation, originality of argument
  4. comprehensive knowledge of the subject
  5. excellent understanding of issues and debates
  6. confidence in the selection and interpretation of materials/authority
  7. logical and convincing development of an argument
  8. written style appropriate to the level of the work
  9. fluent and articulate expression
  10. correct use of academic referencing
  11. evidence of independent thought and judgment in answering the question
  12. Fail – Below 39%:
  13. A piece in this grade band will display most, if not all, of the following characteristics:
  14. irrelevant content, vagueness, error, general lack of understanding
  15. limited knowledge of the subject
  16. significant factual errors
  17. little understanding or actual misunderstanding of the issues and debates
  18. severe difficulty in selecting and interpreting material
  19. illogical or incomplete development of argument
  20. a written style entirely inappropriate for study at this level
  21. confused, muddled or misleading, or incoherent expression
  22. incorrect use or absence of academic referencing
  23. too short
  24. 10.000 words or 36 pages
